Dr. Manouchehr Hessabi, M.D., M.P.H., is based in Houston, Texas. He brings an unusually broad medical and research background that spans two countries and several decades.
Education and training
Dr. Hessabi earned his M.D. from Islamic Azad University in Tehran (1994), followed by his M.P.H. from Tehran University of Medical Sciences (2007). He has additional specialized training in Sports Medicine from the International Olympic Committee's Medicine Commission (2003) and in Geriatrics from the United Nations' International Institute on Aging (Malta, 2002).
Current roles
Dr. Hessabi currently wears two professional hats.
At UTHealth Houston, he is Program Manager, Research at the Biostatistics/Epidemiology/Research Design (BERD) Core of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS), a position he has held since April 2022. He has been part of the BERD team continuously since 2009, progressing from Research Assistant to Senior Research Associate to his current role.
At the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), he is Full-time Faculty in Medicine, where he also chairs the Curriculum Review Committee and serves on the Institutional Review Board.
Research strengths
Dr. Hessabi is deeply experienced in clinical trials (nine or more to date), data management with REDCap, statistical analysis using SAS, SPSS, and STATA, and grant-writing support. Much of his published work focuses on autism spectrum disorder, environmental exposures including heavy metals, and stroke. As Data Manager on the landmark SELECT2 trial, he contributed to primary publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and JAMA Neurology.
Teaching
At ACAOM, Dr. Hessabi teaches a wide biomedical curriculum that includes Histology, Physiology, Gross and Regional Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Microbiology, Pathology and Advanced Pathology, Pharmacology, Western Diagnostic Methods, Integrative Oncology, Integrative Geriatrics, Integrative Traumatology, Integrative Gynecology, and Integrative Dermatology. He has supervised 69+ Doctoral Capstone Projects as a member or chair of the students' committees.
An earlier career in Iran
Before his U.S. career, Dr. Hessabi held multiple academic and administrative roles in Iran. Most notably, he served as General Director and Physician of the Sports Medicine Consulate Center in Tehran (2001 to 2005). He also held instructor appointments at the Iran University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Rejaei University, and the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, and held administrative posts in the Iranian State Welfare Organization's Department of Rehabilitation Affairs.
